BMW X1 Wireless CarPlay Adapter: Full Setup Guide (2018–2026)

BMW X1 Wireless CarPlay Adapter: Full Setup Guide (2018–2026)

If you drive a BMW X1 and still plug in your iPhone every time you want CarPlay, you're not alone — but you don't have to. A wireless CarPlay adapter lets you ditch the cable entirely and have CarPlay launch automatically the moment you start your car.

This guide covers every BMW X1 generation from 2018 to 2026, tells you exactly which models are compatible, and walks you through setup step by step.

Does the BMW X1 Have CarPlay?

Yes — but it depends on the year and trim.

BMW began offering Apple CarPlay on the X1 from 2018 onwards (F48 facelift). However, early models (2018–2019) originally required a paid subscription to activate CarPlay — BMW later dropped this fee in 2019 following customer backlash.

From 2020 onwards, CarPlay comes standard and free on all X1 trims equipped with the iDrive infotainment system.

Quick compatibility check by generation:

Generation Years CarPlay?
F48 (facelift) 2018–2022 ✅ Yes (wired standard)
U11 2023–2026 ✅ Yes (wireless built-in on higher trims)

Note: Some 2023–2026 U11 X1 models already have built-in wireless CarPlay — if yours does, you don't need an adapter. Check your iDrive settings under Communication → Apple CarPlay.

Does the BMW X1 Support Wireless CarPlay?

  • 2018–2022 (F48): Wired CarPlay only from the factory. A wireless CarPlay adapter is needed to go wireless.
  • 2023–2026 (U11): Higher trims include native wireless CarPlay. Base trims may still be wired-only and benefit from an adapter.

What You Need

  • A BMW X1 (2018–2026) with factory wired CarPlay
  • An iPhone 7 or later running iOS 10 or higher (latest iOS recommended for best performance)

How to Set Up Wireless CarPlay on Your BMW X1

Step 1 — Plug in the Adapter

Insert the Homniva adapter into your BMW X1's USB-A port (usually located in the centre console or glove box). Use the USB-A port, not USB-C, for best compatibility.

Step 2 — Enable Bluetooth & Wi-Fi on Your iPhone

Make sure both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are turned on. You don't need to connect to a specific network — just leave Wi-Fi enabled.

Step 3 — Start Your Car

Turn on the ignition. The adapter will power up and appear as a Bluetooth device.

Step 4 — Pair via Bluetooth

On your iPhone, go to Settings → Bluetooth and connect to the device named Homniva (or similar). This only needs to be done once.

Step 5 — Activate CarPlay on iDrive

On your BMW X1's iDrive screen, navigate to Communication → Apple CarPlay and select Connect via CarPlay. Follow the on-screen prompt to authorise the connection.

Step 6 — Done

CarPlay will launch on your iDrive screen. From now on, every time you start your X1, CarPlay will connect automatically — no cable, no tapping.

Troubleshooting: BMW X1 Wireless CarPlay Issues

CarPlay not showing up on iDrive?
Go to iDrive Settings → Connections → Apple CarPlay and make sure CarPlay is enabled. Some BMW models require you to enable it once in the menu before it appears.

Adapter not pairing?
Try a different USB port — the X1 has multiple USB ports and not all supply consistent power. The front centre console USB-A port is usually the most reliable.

Connection drops after a few minutes?
This is often a Wi-Fi interference issue. Move any other devices away from the centre console and ensure your iPhone's Wi-Fi is not set to "Ask to Join Networks" (turn that off in Settings → Wi-Fi).

iDrive shows "CarPlay not available"?
This can happen on 2018–2019 models if CarPlay was never activated. Check with your BMW dealer or via the BMW ConnectedDrive portal to confirm CarPlay is enabled on your VIN.

Yes — you can switch freely between BMW's native navigation and Apple Maps or Google Maps via CarPlay at any time.
