Why Is My CarPlay Not Working? (Fix It in Minutes)

CarPlay was working fine — and now it's not. Before you book a dealer appointment or replace anything, the fix is almost always simple.

Here are the most common reasons CarPlay stops working, and exactly how to fix each one.

1. CarPlay Is Disabled on Your iPhone

This is the most common cause — especially after an iOS update.

Fix:

  1. Go to Settings → General → CarPlay
  2. Check that your car appears in the list
  3. If it's missing, you may need to re-pair (see below)
  4. Also check: Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → Allowed Apps — make sure CarPlay is enabled

2. Bluetooth or Wi-Fi Is Turned Off

Wireless CarPlay requires both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to be active on your iPhone. If either is off — or if you've toggled them off from Control Centre — CarPlay won't connect.

Fix:

  • Go to Settings → Bluetooth — make sure it's ON
  • Go to Settings → Wi-Fi — make sure it's ON
  • Note: toggling from Control Centre only temporarily disables these — go to Settings to fully enable them

3. Your iPhone Needs to Re-Pair with the Adapter or Car

Sometimes the Bluetooth pairing between your iPhone and your car (or wireless CarPlay adapter) gets corrupted — especially after an iOS update.

Fix:

  1. Go to Settings → Bluetooth and find your car or adapter in the list
  2. Tap the ⓘ icon and select Forget This Device
  3. Go to Settings → General → CarPlay and remove your car from the list
  4. Restart your iPhone
  5. Re-pair from scratch following the original setup steps

4. The USB Port Has an Issue (Wired CarPlay)

If you're using wired CarPlay and it's stopped working, the issue is often the cable or the USB port — not CarPlay itself.

Fix:

  • Try a different Apple-certified Lightning or USB-C cable
  • Try a different USB port in your car if one is available
  • Clean the port gently with compressed air — dust and debris are common culprits
  • Test the cable with another device to confirm it's working

5. iOS Needs an Update

Older iOS versions can have CarPlay bugs that Apple has already fixed in newer updates.

Fix:

  1. Go to Settings → General → Software Update
  2. Install any available updates
  3. Restart your iPhone after updating and test CarPlay again

6. Your Car's Infotainment System Needs a Restart

Like any computer, your car's infotainment system can occasionally freeze or get into a bad state. A full reset usually fixes it.

Fix:

  • Turn off your car completely, remove the key, and wait 60 seconds
  • Restart the car and try connecting CarPlay again
  • Some cars have a dedicated infotainment reset — check your owner's manual

7. Siri Is Disabled

CarPlay requires Siri to be enabled on your iPhone. If Siri is off, CarPlay won't launch.

Fix:

  1. Go to Settings → Siri & Search
  2. Enable Press Side Button for Siri (or Home Button on older models)
  3. Enable Listen for "Hey Siri"

8. Wireless CarPlay Adapter Isn't Seated Properly

If you're using a wireless CarPlay adapter and it's suddenly stopped working, the most common cause is a loose connection in the USB port.

Fix:

  • Remove the adapter and reinsert it firmly
  • Try a different USB port if your car has more than one
  • Check that the adapter's indicator light is on when the car starts

9. CarPlay Is Restricted by Your Mobile Network

In some regions, certain mobile carriers restrict CarPlay features — particularly real-time data features like live traffic in Apple Maps.

Fix:

  • This is rare and usually affects specific apps rather than CarPlay itself
  • If Maps isn't loading live data, check your mobile data connection and carrier settings

Still Not Working? Try This Full Reset Sequence

  1. Forget the car/adapter in Settings → Bluetooth
  2. Remove the car in Settings → General → CarPlay
  3. Restart your iPhone
  4. Turn off your car, wait 60 seconds, restart
  5. Re-pair from scratch

This resolves the vast majority of CarPlay issues — including ones that have persisted for weeks.

Common Questions

Q: CarPlay was working yesterday — why did it stop?
The most common cause is an iOS update that reset CarPlay permissions or corrupted the Bluetooth pairing. Follow the re-pair steps above.

Q: My CarPlay connects but the screen is black.
This is usually a display handshake issue. Restart your car's infotainment system and reconnect. If it persists, check for a firmware update for your car's system.

Q: CarPlay keeps disconnecting mid-drive.
For wired CarPlay, this is almost always a faulty cable. For wireless CarPlay, it's usually Wi-Fi interference — try moving your phone closer to the center console.

Q: Does wireless CarPlay have more connection issues than wired?
Wireless CarPlay is slightly more sensitive to initial setup, but once paired correctly it's very stable. Read our full guide: Is Wireless CarPlay Worth It in 2026?

Q: Will a wireless CarPlay adapter fix my wired CarPlay problems?
If your wired CarPlay issues are cable or port related — yes, switching to a wireless adapter eliminates those problems entirely. See: How to Connect Wireless CarPlay for the First Time

Upgrade to Wireless and Eliminate Cable Problems Forever

Most wired CarPlay problems come down to cables, ports, and connections. Switching to wireless CarPlay removes all of that — your iPhone connects automatically every time you start the car, no cable required.
